[WEEK1- SEPTEMBER 2026]
The text below is a brief excerpt from interviews conducted by Cambodian youth volunteers under the project “Promoting Democracy and Good Governance through Youth Volunteers Leadership in Social Action” of the Documentation Center of Cambodia. It is worth recalling that over a 6-month period since mid-2025, 85 Cambodian youth volunteers who volunteered in the above project met, interviewed, and conversed with more than 500 survivors of the Khmer Rouge regime residing within their own villages and communes. The purpose of this work is to document the bitter and unforgettable experiences of Khmer Rouge survivors. This project also provides young people with opportunities to study democracy, good governance, leadership, communication, and community development.

Meas Ngon: The Khmer Rouge Forced Me to Work Until I Suffered a Miscarriage

My name is Meas Ngon, 80 years old, currently living in Saen Bon village, Leay Bour commune, Tram Kak district, Takeo province. My husband, Chan Tong, passed away from an illness at the age of 74. We had seven children (four daughters and three sons), but one child died during the Khmer Rouge regime. Today, the six surviving children all work as farmers. As for me, I suffer from chronic hypertension and am receiving regular medical treatment.

During the Khmer Rouge regime, I was assigned to work in the economic unit. Initially, they forced me to transplant rice north of Leay Bour Pagoda while I was about three to four months pregnant. At that time, they set a quota for four people to race to transplant one hectare of rice fields in a single day. Because I was suffering from morning sickness and severe exhaustion, I protested to the unit leader that I was pregnant, had morning sickness, and could not work fast. However, the unit leader refused my plea and accused me, saying, “No! Old woman, you are lying to me. With long arms and legs like yours, you can work very fast.”

About two to three days later, due to overexertion from hard labor, I suffered severe abdominal pain to the point of suspecting a miscarriage. I asked the unit leader to return home, but he refused, accusing me of having a mental illness. After a day and a night, the pain grew increasingly severe until I could no longer bear it and groaned in agony, prompting them to send me to the hospital. After one night at the hospital, I suffered a miscarriage around noon. I screamed for the medic to help because I felt completely numb and deeply unwell. The medic gave me an injection, and when I asked to return home, the medic instead told me to go straight back to the workplace.

Upon returning to work, they reassigned me to lighter, less grueling tasks. Nearly a month later, they assigned me to a dirt-carrying basket team alongside elderly women and other women, and later shifted me to gathering vegetables. As for my husband, he was also assigned to the economic unit, responsible for fishing and climbing palm trees to harvest sugar. A while later, I became pregnant with my second child and gave birth without a professional midwife, assisted only by an elderly woman in the village.

When the Vietnamese forces attacked, they drafted my husband and me to evacuate to a mountain (I cannot recall its name). Since I was pregnant with my third child at the time, I discussed with my husband along the way that we should secretly escape back. My husband agreed, and we quietly made our way back. We walked, carrying various belongings on shoulder poles, until we reached Angkorun Pagoda, bringing five cows with us. However, out of extreme exhaustion, my husband gradually released the cows one by one until none were left. Along the way, I felt terrified because I had to step over numerous dead bodies scattered around. Immediately after the fall of the Khmer Rouge regime, my family and I stayed west of Kampot province for a short period. Once the situation calmed down, we returned to reunite and live in our hometown.

Whenever I recall those memories from the Khmer Rouge regime, I still feel shocked and terrified because back then, I had to care for a small child while suffering back-to-back pregnancies. I truly want the younger generation to remember and understand the suffering of that era. The other day, a youth complained to me about being tired from walking. I recounted to that youth how people in that era were forced to work beyond their strength, lacked food, and had to walk barefoot every day from the fields to home and from home to the fields. In fact, my husband and I had to walk very long distances—walking all the way from this village to Tram Kak Market.

San Sary: My Father Fell Ill and Died from the Grief of the Khmer Rouge Executing His Brothers

My name is San Sary, 64 years old, currently residing in Sbaek Keu village, Kandaol Chrum commune, Ponhea Krek district, Tboung Khmum province. My husband’s name is Sang Ches, 69 years old. We have five children (two daughters).

The story from the Khmer Rouge regime that I will never forget is being forced to perform heavy labor, such as carrying earth and digging numerous canals, and rarely eating my fill even once. Every day, I received only thin rice gruel, and I never knew where they took all the harvested rice. Back then, although no one physically harmed me directly, the Angkar forced me to work days and nights without any rest.

In 1975, my father fell ill and died from overwhelming grief after seeing the Khmer Rouge capture his brothers—who were Lon Nol soldiers—and take them away to be executed. Among them, one of his elder brothers, who was a right-hand soldier to Norodom Sihanouk, was also killed by the Khmer Rouge. Initially, that uncle fled following Norodom Sihanouk in Phnom Penh, but the Khmer Rouge pursued and executed him there. Meanwhile, my father’s other brothers, who were Lon Nol soldiers, were discharged from military ranks and fled back home, but Khmer Rouge cadres summoned them for “re-education.” At that time, my father and his brothers saw each other’s faces for only a single evening before the Khmer Rouge took them all away to be executed. Beyond this, many of my father’s cousins who were Lon Nol era soldiers were killed by the Khmer Rouge without exception.

My brothers’ fate was no different from my uncles’. The Khmer Rouge captured two of my elder brothers and executed them—one was a Lon Nol soldier, and the other was a Khmer Rouge soldier who had fought against the Vietnamese forces. Although I did not witness the executions with my own eyes, I saw my brothers and many other Lon Nol soldiers rounded up in large numbers in Kandaol Chrum commune before being transported away to be killed.

During more than three years under the rule of the Angkar, I was assigned to a mobile unit. They used me to carry out heavy tasks no different from men, even carrying heavy sacks of rice. When the fighting with the Vietnamese troops intensified, the Angkar selected large-built women to board trucks. At the time, I wondered where they were taking us. Only upon arriving in the forest did I realize they took us to dig graves to bury dead Khmer Rouge soldiers from Division 4 and Division 5 who had perished in battle.

Before long, the sounds of explosions and fighting drew closer to the village, so I secretly ran back home. During that time, the Khmer Rouge attempted to draft me into military service, but I adamantly refused because I had to take responsibility for caring for my younger siblings and my widowed mother to flee the chaotic region. When the Vietnamese troops arrived, my family and I hid in Tuol Pou village, Kandaol Chrum commune, Ponhea Krek district, Tboung Khmum province, remaining there until the situation calmed down and we could return to our native home village.

Whenever I recall this past, I feel deep pain and intense anger toward the Khmer Rouge because even when we lost our relatives, they did not allow us to weep or mourn. At one point, while burying dead soldiers, I cried out of pity for them and thought of the fate of my own deceased siblings, only to be harshly reprimanded by the unit leader, who nearly took me away to be executed as well. I do not want the younger generation to experience or have to hold memories of such tragic events, as that era was filled with extreme suffering—throughout an entire year, we hardly had a single meal of cooked rice, consuming only watery gruel with black banana-stem soup. I firmly believe that if the Khmer Rouge army had continued to rule for just one more year, I certainly would not be alive today, as the restrictions and mistreatment grew harsher day by day.

Pan Son: Local Militia and Commune Committee Forced Me to Be Yoked Like an Ox to Plow Rice Fields

My name is Pan Son, 86 years old, currently living in Saen Bon village, Leay Bo commune, Tram Kak district, Takeo province. Today, I serve as a pagoda committee member, but during the Khmer Rouge regime, I was assigned to work in economic and mobile units. My wife’s name is Sok Rin, 78 years old. We had six sons (four are living, working as factory workers, and two died of illnesses). Due to extreme, hard labor during the Khmer Rouge era, I suffer from chronic lung disease to this day and require monthly prescribed medical treatment.

During the Khmer Rouge regime, the Angkar initially assigned me to work in the economic unit. Shortly after starting, they dismissed me because I failed to meet the Angkar’s work quotas. Later, the unit committee summoned me for “re-education,” accusing me of having bad “tendencies” (sati-aram) and leaning toward the enemy. The unit committee forced me to place my thumbprint acknowledging the fault as evidence for my first re-education. Subsequently, they sent me to be “tempered” (lot-dom) in the plowing unit, where district militia and commune committee members forced me to be yoked in place of an ox to plow the rice fields. At that time, they designated three people per plow (one person holding the plow handles and two yoked to pull in place of an ox); if we could not pull the plow, we were brutally beaten.

Later on, they sent me to live and work in Battambang province. Their true intention was to send me there to die, but fortunately, I survived. Many people sent to Battambang like me were executed or died. Upon arriving in Battambang, they placed me in a mobile unit, forcing me to dig earth, carry dirt, plant peanuts, and loosen soil around orange trees. For carrying earth from anthills, they set a quota of up to 300 loads per day; if anyone failed to meet the quota, they suffered severe torture. Every night, militia members eavesdropped under the stilt houses where we stayed, so no one dared to speak carelessly.

Before the Vietnamese troops arrived, they used me and other people to dig large pits, falsely claiming they were for fertilizer storage. However, as the Vietnamese troops drew closer to Battambang province, they captured several members of the mobile unit, beat them to death, threw them into those pits, and buried them. I lived in Battambang province for over a year before the Vietnamese troops arrived, allowing me to return to my hometown. During that era, food was extremely scarce, a large cauldron of gruel contained only three tin cans of rice.

I witnessed with my own eyes the capture of former government officials, who were interrogated and tortured by being tied by their feet, suspended upside down, and dunked headfirst into water. Only when the prisoner was on the verge of drowning from choking on water would they loosen the rope to pull them back up. Their questioning sought to find out what work those individuals had done during the Lon Nol regime, inflicting this torture until they got an answer.

During the Khmer Rouge regime, four of my wife’s siblings were sent to serve in the military and have remained missing to this day. Having survived this cruel regime, I feel immense hatred toward the Khmer Rouge and never want such a regime to return. I want the younger generation to remember, and I often tell my children and grandchildren about the suffering and abuse I experienced, because they did not have the chance to be born in time to witness and know it like I did.

Deah Hat: I Was Forced to Eat Pork Due to Severe Starvation

My name is Deah Hat, 65 years old, a Khmer-Muslim living in Kampong Ampil village, Borei Cholsar commune, Borei Cholsar district, Takeo province. My wife’s name is Din Rom, 65 years old, and we have nine children (four daughters), all of whom currently work as fishers.
During the Khmer Rouge regime, the story that I can never forget is being forced to eat pork due to extreme starvation. At that time, I received very little food but had to perform heavy labor, so I had to eat whatever was available to have enough strength to work for the Angkar. I was placed in a children’s unit, tasked with doing heavy work such as digging soil, carrying earth from anthills on shoulder poles, and carrying fertilizer to the rice fields at the “Kdei Daem” worksite located in Koh Andet district, Takeo province.

Later, the Angkar began dispersing Muslims to live interspersed with the Khmer population, scattering 3 to 4 families per village. At that point, I was sent to live in Ta Bu village and Prey Thom village, Pech Sar commune, Koh Andet district. Upon arriving there, older children like me were used by Khmer Rouge cadres to carry and transport sacks of rice on stretchers and subsequently sent back to dig earth from anthills and carry it on shoulder poles. The task of digging anthill earth had no fixed quota; we simply had to work from morning until evening with only very brief rest periods. Every morning at 6:00 AM, the children’s unit had to line up for the group leader to conduct a head count, fearing we might flee work or refuse to labor.

During that era, I never lived with my parents because children were required to live and work according to their respective units, though it was not yet as severe as the mobile units. Each day, the Angkar provided me and all the children in the unit with watery rice gruel only twice a day. Initially, I ate only the broth and vegetables, but over time, I ate pork as well because the watery gruel provided was mostly water and never filled our stomachs. If we did not eat it, we would have certainly starved to death, as many people died back then due to food shortages.

Whenever I recall these bitter experiences, I feel deeply emotional. I truly do not wish to think back to that era because it fills me with fear and dread. The younger generation who did not live through it cannot understand how difficult life was back then, and I do not wish for them to ever encounter such hardship, because in that era, making even a minor mistake could result in being taken away by the Angkar to be beaten to death.

Be Nop: Although They Did Not Force Me to Eat Pork Soup, I Could Not Request Fermented Fish Paste or Salt from the Angkar Either

My name is Be Nop, 88 years old, currently residing in Kampong Ampil village, Borei Cholsar commune, Borei Cholsar district, Takeo province. My husband’s name is Kop Bua, 90 years old. We had eight children (two daughters), but one child has passed away.

The story from the Khmer Rouge regime that I will never forget is that if there was any day I failed to go to work, the Angkar would starve me without fail. Sometimes, even when I told them I was sick, they did not believe me and accused me of feigning illness. At that time, the Angkar placed me in a mobile unit to perform heavy labor, such as carrying earth from anthills on shoulder poles, breaking down anthill soil, pedaling waterwheels, and tending rice fields in Trapeang Ta Ouy village, Krapum Chhook commune, Koh Andet district.

Later, the Angkar transferred me to live and farm in Prey Mlou village, Krapum Chhook commune, Koh Andet district, because at that time the Angkar separated Khmer-Muslim brothers and sisters, forcing them to live apart. From then on, my mother and I rarely saw each other, to the point that when she passed away, I did not even receive the news.
In Prey Mlou village, the Angkar set a work quota for me to transplant two plon (80 bundles) of rice seedlings in a single morning, and I had to complete it strictly according to the quota. Beyond this, I had to work continuously without rest, pedaling waterwheels, pulling seedlings, tying sheaves, harvesting rice, threshing rice, and gathering rice into granaries, repeating this cycle year after year. Yet in the end, I never knew where the Angkar transported all that rice. Many people were deeply enraged by the Angkar because they labored nearly to death, but the Angkar provided only daily gruel, and in some places, only two pieces of cassava. As for me, the Angkar gave me two meals of rice per day—one ladle in the morning and one in the evening—but it was only mushy, watery rice.

Although they did not force us to eat pork soup (which violated our religious beliefs), when we requested prahok (fermented fish paste) or salt to eat with our rice, they refused to give it to us. Thus, we were forced to eat plain, unseasoned rice without soup. When cooks brought rice to the mobile unit in the rice fields, I could only secretly steal a little salt from them to eat with my rice, because the soup they brought was greasy and smelled of pork, which I could not eat. Therefore, during that era, others ate meat, while I could only eat salt. In spare moments, I secretly picked wild plants to hide in a small woven basket (smok) to eat, but if the Angkar discovered it, I would have certainly been executed. Every night, the Angkar walked around monitoring and eavesdropping under the house in case I secretly hid milled rice to eat, as the Angkar also assigned me to pound rice. However, even if I could steal a tiny bit of rice, I did not dare cook it to eat for fear that the Angkar would find out and beat me to death.

Whenever I recall these bitter experiences, I feel intense anger, but I could only suppress it within my heart. I do not want the younger generation to encounter such sad stories like I did, because it was a life of extreme suffering and immense hardship.

Mam Mara: The Angkar Executed Village Chiefs and Evacuated Villagers Overnight

My name is Mam Mara, 58 years old, currently residing in Spean Chrey village, Doun Tei commune, Ponhea Kraek district, Tboung Khmum province. My husband, Tuy Van, passed away at the age of 54 due to illness (goiter). We had four children (one daughter). During the Khmer Rouge regime, because of my young age, I did not perform heavy labor other than studying a little bit with the Angkar, and in my spare time, I often helped my mother with various tasks when the Angkar assigned her work.

Shortly before the Khmer Rouge gained full control of the country, I lost an elder brother. Originally, he had ordained as a Buddhist monk, but later disrobed after falling ill. Upon recovering, the Khmer Rumdo (liberation forces) came to ask him to volunteer as a soldier. At that time, my mother tried to stop him from going, arguing that the country was close to being liberated, but she could not prevent him. My brother boarded a truck with the Khmer Rumdo forces and disappeared completely to this day. By now, I believe he has likely passed away.

When the Khmer Rouge era arrived, during the period when the Angkar collected all personal property and belongings to place into collective ownership, my honest parents surrendered all household dishes and pots without resistance for communal use. Later, the Angkar attempted to kill my father without reason on multiple occasions. Local militia searched for him several days in a row but never caught him at home because he always managed to flee in time. He instructed me that if anyone came asking for him, I should say I did not know. My father had always been an educated and intelligent man, which allowed him to evade their pursuit and survive.

Later on, the Angkar executed several village chiefs, and most villagers were evacuated from the village overnight, though I never learned the true reason behind this event. At that time, the cadres driving the evacuation were young children around 10 years old carrying long rifles that dragged on the ground. They shouted and intimidated the people to march faster. Upon arriving in the middle of a rice field with a Bodhi tree in Cheung Khal village, Mong Riev commune, Tboung Khmum district, those young cadres permitted the people to rest briefly before continuing forward. We traveled for half a month until reaching a location where we had to cross a body of water. However, because the water was too deep and young children could not cross, the cadres forced us to cut bamboo to construct a bridge. While we were building the bridge, Vietnamese troops arrived in battle and told the people to turn back and return home. At that moment, those with oxcarts immediately drove them home, while my family had only shoulder poles for our belongings and had to travel on foot. Thus, after being liberated, we stayed overnight in Damril village, Damril commune, Ou Reang Ou district, before continuing our journey back home.

Whenever I recall these memories, I feel intense hatred toward the Khmer Rouge regime because it was brutal, barbaric, and killed people mercilessly. I truly want the younger generation to remember the historical events that occurred during that period. It would be wonderful if educated people or researchers visited to study Khmer Rouge history so youth could understand, as some young people remain unaware of the hardships that took place. I want them to know how much suffering their grandparents endured just to preserve their lives and build a foundation so their descendants could have opportunities to study and achieve prosperous, improved lives today.

Mey Muy: I Saw Children of “April 17 People” Shackled and Starved

My name is Mey Muy, 58 years old, currently living in Kreang Kor village, Tram Kak commune, Tram Kak district, Takeo province. My current occupation is farming. My husband’s name is Sok Proy, 62 years old, who is also a farmer. We have four children (three daughters and one son), and all of them work as farmers. Currently, I suffer from chronic stomach and kidney ailments, which I treat through traditional Khmer methods by boiling tree roots and bark to drink daily.

On the day the Khmer Rouge took over the entire country, the Angkar evacuated me to live and work in Krapum Chhouk village, Krapum Chhouk commune, Koh Andet district, Takeo province. At that time, I was about 11 years old. The Angkar required me to live separated from my mother, placing me in a children’s unit while my mother was sent to perform agricultural work. In the children’s unit, they used me for various tasks such as collecting cow dung, cutting rice stubble, peeling rattan bark, shoveling trash, and weeding in the water. The most grueling work was weeding in the water because it was filled with leeches and snakes—creatures I feared most—and whenever it rained, frightening lightning and thunder roared while I had to labor in the middle of a vast, open lake without any shelter. Although the unit leader never physically abused the other children or me, he constantly threatened that anyone who failed to meet the Angkar’s work plan would face starvation.
One day, I saw children in the unit being put in chains and starved because they were the children of “April 17 People” who had been evacuated from Phnom Penh, whose parents had worked in the previous regime. Later, I saw another child being starved as well, though not put in chains. The reason behind these detentions and starvation was that, driven by extreme hunger, those children had resorted to begging others for rice to eat.

Outside of work hours, children had to study under the shade of trees. Back then, I learned only a little—just enough to recognize the letters “Ka” and “Kha”—because there was no chalk or pen for writing. I and the other children had no clothes to change into; we had only one set of clothes on our backs, which we had to wear wet almost every day until lice infested the waistline of our trousers. As for food, there was extreme scarcity; we worked beyond our strength but were never given enough to eat. Furthermore, our hardship extended to having no clean water to drink, because the water pond in Krapum Chhouk village was filled with dead bodies executed by the Khmer Rouge. Initially, I did not know there were corpses in that pond, but I always wondered why every time I fetched water to drink or use, the water was slimy and had an unusually strange blue color. Over time, when the pond dried up, I and the other villagers were shocked to see human skulls and bones inside. After the collapse of the Khmer Rouge regime, residents living nearby collected numerous skulls and human bones from it.

Having endured these bitter experiences, I deeply detest the Khmer Rouge regime because they provided only thin gruel, and I never want our nation to encounter or experience such a regime ever again. I want the younger generation to remember and unite to ensure that this dark regime never recurs.
