On Thursday, afternoon, October 22, 2026, Bak Nim Community Healing Center warmly welcomed four Khmer Rouge survivors traveling from Puos Pong village, Nearay commune, Chhouk district, Kampot province. The visit was organized and welcomed by Mr. Phat Ponlok and his team stationed at Bak Nim Community Healing Center. This visit mainly established a vital opportunity to collect historical documents relating to personal life stories and experiences of survivors during the Khmer Rouge regime from 1975 to 1979. Moreover, in current time, the center’s team regularly conducts community field visits to learn about, check on, and observe their general health conditions.

The four survivors who visited Bak Nim Community Healing Center are:

• Grandmother Pen Channy is 67 years old.
• Grandmother Neak Ny is 70 years old.
• Grandmother Sek Vansy is 70 years old.
• Mrs. Long Aun is 55 years old.

According to recorded accounts, during the Khmer Rouge regime between 1975 and 1979, Grandmothers Pen Channy and Sek Vansy were assigned by the Khmer Rouge to suffer hard labor in female mobile units, which were constantly moved from one worksite to another. Meanwhile, Grandmother Neak Ny was selected by the Khmer Rouge to serve as a female medic at Puos Pong village hospital in Chhouk district, Kampot province. As for Mrs. Long Aun, who was still a child at the time, she was assigned to live in village child unit. These distinct life stories and experiences clearly reflect their different roles, living conditions, and hardships that they used to experience during that regime.

Recalling the bitter past life stories and experiences, this visit highlighted serious impacts of the past on the physical and mental health of Khmer Rouge survivors, underscoring the urgent need to promote and prioritize their healthcare.

Currently, survivors’ health conditions are as follows:

• Grandmother Pen Channy suffers from high blood pressure and diabetes.
• Grandmother Neak Ny suffers from high blood pressure and joint pain.
• Grandmother Sek Vansy suffers from high blood pressure.
• Mrs. Long Aun suffers from diabetes and high blood pressure.

The health condition of the survivors highlights a necessary need for attention, welfare promotion, and the provision of healthcare services for the elder people who experienced and suffered from the Khmer Rouge’s regime (1975–1979).

The survivors’ visit to Bak Nim Community Healing Center was not a social gathering, but a crucial initiative for preserving and documenting oral history. Bak Nim Community Healing Center continues to play an active role in collecting historical accounts, raising public awareness about the Khmer Rouge history, and providing welfare counseling for former survivors being guided by the booklet on the healthcare of Khmer Rouge survivors published by the Documentation Center of Cambodia in 2023.
In addition, collecting and preserving these real-life stories and experiences serves as a driving force to deepen understanding and acts as a historical mirror to the survivors’ memories for future generations, helping to prevent such a bitter history from happening again.
