Un Hing: Whipped with Rattan and Starved for Missing Work
My name is Oun Hing, female, 58 years old. I was born in Chumnum Pol Village, Choam Ta Mao Commune, Memot District, Kampong Cham Province (now Tboung Khmum Province), where I currently reside. My father, My Un, passed away three years ago due to old age, and my mother, At, is also deceased. I have four siblings (three girls), and I am the second child. I married my husband, Chhour, and have two children (one daughter).

During my childhood, I did not receive a proper education like ordinary children. I grew up during the war and the Khmer Rouge regime. After the Khmer Rouge came to power in 1975, the Khmer Rouge seized private property to place under collectivism and established a cooperative in Chumnum Pol Village. They organized the population into children’s units, mobile youth units, adult units, and units of elders assigned to supervise the children.

The village cooperative had a teacher named Neath who gathered 10 to 15 children for lessons beneath a rain tree (samanea saman). However, children under the Khmer Rouge worked far more than they studied. My peers and I studied for only an hour a day. The rest of the time, we were sent to rice paddies to weed, apply fertilizer, clear dense brush, and collect animal and human feces for manure. Around 11:00 AM, a whistle blew signaling the children to grab plates and spoons to collect rice or porridge. I would run with my dish to receive rice mixed with bananas, while my parents worked far outside the village and only returned home late in the evening.

In 1977, the Khmer Rouge evacuated my family and other villagers from Chumnum Pol Village to Sre Sranok Village, Damrei Phong Commune, Chhloung District, Kratie Province. My parents were assigned to mobile labor units to clear forestland for farming. During the rainy season, the Khmer Rouge forced people to work without rest. My father plowed and harrowed the paddies, while my mother uprooted seedlings and transplanted rice alongside mobile units from other regions. I was assigned to tend water buffaloes after the plowing finished. Terrified of the dense jungle, I stayed close to the other herd children, driving the buffaloes back into their pen at dusk.

In 1978, the Khmer Rouge forced our family and other villagers to evacuate Sre Sranok Village, barring us from bringing rice, grain, or valuables. My family managed to conceal a single clay pot of rice inside a bundle of clothing. We marched on foot for two days and two nights to Veal Kansaeng Village, Kampong Damrei Commune, Chhloung District, Kratie Province. Upon arrival, my father cut saplings and gathered traing (corypha) leaves to build a small makeshift shelter against the rain.

I was forced to perform grueling labor without rest. Food was severely restricted; receiving merely one ladle of porridge per day left me emaciated, weak, and eventually so sick that I could not weed the fields with the other children. Phai, the chief of the children’s unit in Veal Kansaeng Village, conducted roll call for morning labor. Noticing my absence, he waited until porridge distribution time, where he seized me, beat me with a rattan cane, and starved me for an entire day. Unit Chief Phai declared to the gathered children: “This person is lazy and faking sickness, yet shows up to consume rations when it is time to eat. We punish comrade Un Hing as an example so others will not follow suit.”

After the torture, I limped back to the shelter to await my mother. Returning at dusk, she broke into tears when she saw my body covered in welted wounds. She hugged me and searched for herbal medicine to soothe the cuts, asking, “Does it hurt, my child? Who did this to you?” I recounted the story. Her face fell with grief and helplessness, unable to confront the cooperative chief. She comforted me, urging me to endure just a little longer because we would leave soon. Roughly a week later, my injuries subsided, and I returned to manual labor.

As Vietnamese forces launched an offensive, the Khmer Rouge retreated in disarray and rushed to evacuate the population. Two days after we reached Kampong Kor Commune in Prek Prasab District, Kratie Province, the Khmer Rouge military collapsed and fled. I began walking back to my homeland. Reaching Prama Village, Damrei Phong Commune, The Uprissing soldiers called 09 military distributed two paot (tin cans) of unhusked rice per person. Returning home, I used part of that rice for daily food and kept the rest as seed grain for cultivation.
