Queen Mother Approves Stung Treng Residence Museum

With Queen Mother Norodom Monineath’s approval, Stung Treng’s historic royal residence will be renovated into a museum to preserve Cambodia’s royal heritage, promote local tourism, and honour the nation’s struggle for peace and independence.

I am honored to accept this most gracious grant of permission to use and renovate royal property from the Sangkum Reastr Niyum in Stung Treng province. The property is the old Royal Residence in Stung Treng provincial town, and her Majesty, the Queen Mother, granted permission for Documentation Center of Cambodia/The Queen Mother’s Library to use and renovate the property, which will be dedicated to the Queen Mother and the late King Father NORODOM SIHANOUK’s struggle for peace and independence for Cambodia. Modern Cambodia was built on this struggle for peace and independence that began with Cambodia’s independence in 1953 and which was challenged ever since from the Vietnam War to even today along Cambodia’s borders with Thailand.

Stung Treng province is less developed than the rest of Cambodia and the region continues to be threatened with a variety of challenges including border security and the protection of natural resources. We look forward to renovating this sacred site as not only a regional museum that contributes to Cambodia’s pursuit of peace, but also a center for regional development.

THE CONCEPT:

Echoing Documentation Center of Cambodia’s mission and reflecting Cambodia’s history and its future, Youk Chhang envisions the Royal Museum Preah Sarak Munti built upon three pillars: Peace, Independence and Development.
