Veal Veng Reconciliation Center: Students from Hun Sen Pramaoy High School came to read books and learn about the history of Democratic Kampuchea (1975-1979)

At 8:00 AM on June 11, 2026, the team at the Veal Veng Reconciliation Center welcomed 10 students from Grade 8A of Hun Sen Pramoy High School (including 4 female students) to read books and participate in a discussion on the topic “Violations of Children’s Rights and Labor” during the Democratic Kampuchea regime (1975–1979).

The purpose of welcoming the students to read books and discuss topics concerning Khmer Rouge history (1975–1979) was as follows:

To share historical knowledge of Cambodia, especially regarding the Democratic Kampuchea regime (1975–1979).

To allow students to study and understand more about the history of Democratic Kampuchea (1975–1979).

To foster good relations between the Veal Veang Reconciliation Center team and the students through education about Democratic Kampuchea history (1975–1979).

Before starting the discussion, the Veal Veng Reconciliation Center team showcased posters, introduced books, various documents, and documentary films related to the Khmer Rouge regime to the students. Afterward, Moeurn Sreynoch asked the students a question: “What have you all previously studied and known about the stories of the Khmer Rouge regime?”

Students Shared the Following Accounts:
My grandfather told me that when he was a soldier, he wore black clothes and fought very hard against the Vietnamese troops.

My grandmother told me that before the Pol Pot era, she lived in Takeo province with her parents and 9 biological siblings. When the Pol Pot era arrived, her parents and all her siblings were arrested and killed by the Khmer Rouge under the accusation of being connected to Vietnam. To this day, my grandmother still grieves because she lives all alone due to the loss of all her family members.

My grandmother told me that she was robbed of all her gold by the Khmer Rouge, and they took all her siblings away to be killed.

My mother used to tell me that when she was a child, the Khmer Rouge would not allow them to eat when they were hungry, and she saw other people being forced to marry by the Angkar.

I have seen on social media that people living during the Khmer Rouge era were severely tortured.

My uncle told me that in 1975, he and his family were evacuated by the Khmer Rouge from their hometown in Krakor district to live in Kandieng district, Pursat province.

My grandmother used to tell me that when the Khmer Rouge evacuated them from their home, they were told to bring only a few belongings.

My grandfather said that during the Pol Pot era, he was assigned to collect duck eggs at a cooperative. One day, some duck eggs went missing because children had taken them to bury in the sand for fun. The Khmer Rouge accused him of “stealing the Angkar’s property” and arrested him with the intention of killing him, but his friend arrived just in time to save him.

My grandmother told me that she was forced to do very hard labor by the Khmer Rouge and was not given enough to eat.

My grandmother used to say that she and two friends violated the Angkar’s orders and tried to escape. However, her two friends were caught and killed by the Khmer Rouge, while she kept running and survived.

Afterward, Sreynoch asked the students further: “What questions do you have that you want to know about the Khmer Rouge regime?”

The Students Asked the Following Questions:
Why didn’t the Khmer Rouge provide enough food to the people and children?

Did children receive an education?

At what age were children taken by the Khmer Rouge to serve in the military?

What kind of work were boys and girls forced to do?

How did people have to live during the Khmer Rouge regime?

Were children forced to do heavy labor just like adults?

Why did the Khmer Rouge force people to marry?

How many killing fields locations has the Documentation Center of Cambodia (DC-Cam) found?

What kind of work were pregnant women and people with disabilities forced to do?

Approximately how many people died during the Khmer Rouge regime?

Who were the Khmer Rouge?

In what year did the Khmer Rouge collapse?

Who was the top leader of the Khmer Rouge regime?

How many years did the Khmer Rouge era last?

In what ways did the Khmer Rouge commit torture?

To proceed, Sreynoch brought up the topic “Violations of Children’s Rights and Labor” during the Democratic Kampuchea regime (1975–1979) to discuss with the students. Sreynoch stated that during the Khmer Rouge regime, there were no formal schools. Children were sent to study under trees or under people’s houses. Most teachers were poor farmers who could read and write only a little. Although education in some regions saw progress in 1978 (where children received primary education for 2 to 3 hours a day), there were still no fully functioning schools for learning.

The Khmer Rouge used to say: “The Angkar has no diplomas, only a sign of sight. If you want a Bac I or Bac II [high school diplomas], you have to go get it at the dams and canals,” and “Learning to read, write, and do math is not important; what matters is work and the revolutionary movement.” While children were taught to read and write just a little, most of their education focused on political indoctrination. Children were selected to attend ideological training sessions to serve as soldiers, guards, or messengers.

Children were also assigned to work during the Democratic Kampuchea regime. Their jobs included walking around to collect cow dung, cutting (Tuntrean Khet) trees, collecting human feces to make fertilizer, and transporting weapons to the battlefields, where some children were struck by bullets and died. Furthermore, boys and girls were separated from their parents and never knew the warmth of a family.

Following this, the team gave the students a story of a Khmer Rouge survivor who was a child during that era to read individually for 30 minutes, followed by a discussion after they finished reading.

The Story of Chhit Chheng: A Former Child Laborer in the Khmer Rouge Regime
Biography:

My name is Chhit Chheng, female, 63 years old. Today, I live with my biological younger sister, earning a living through farming and raising buffaloes. My birthplace is in Tuol Kruos village, Sre Taing Yor commune, Phnom Kravanh district, Pursat province. Currently, I live in Stung Thmey village (Tuol Kakoh area), Pramaoy commune, Veal Veng district, Pursat province. My father was Poy Chhit (deceased during the Khmer Rouge regime). My mother was Sek Tup, who died of illness in 1979. I have 4 biological siblings (3 girls), and I am the eldest child in the family. My younger brother passed away due to starvation during the Khmer Rouge regime.

During my childhood, I did not attend school because my parents were poor and struggled financially. Since there was no one to help my parents with their farm work, I had to work the rice fields with them. After harvesting the rice, my father would travel from Tuol Kruos village deep into the dense forest to collect liquid resin, solid resin, and agarwood to sell and support the family. Once a year, the indigenous Pear people celebrated the New Year. All the indigenous Pear children would play traditional games joyfully—such as Boh Chhoung, Teanh Prot, Leak Kanseng, Boh Angkunh, and many other popular games—at temples and houses to celebrate the New Year. There were also many traditional festivals, including Pchum Ben, Kathina, and the Phnom Srov (Rice Mound) festival.

On March 18, 1970, Marshal Lon Nol led a coup d’état to overthrow Prince Norodom Sihanouk. During that same period, there were no bombings or major incidents in Tuol Kruos village, and the indigenous Pear people could farm normally. It wasn’t until 1973 that I heard the sound of planes dropping bombs in Talo (now located in Talo Sen Chey district), north of Tuol Kruos village. The explosions echoed throughout the village, terrifying the residents and causing them to dig bunkers for self-protection near the forest behind their houses.

Later, American military planes flew circles over Tuol Kruos village every day, shocking the indigenous Pear villagers even further. Some families took their children and fled the village to live in the bunkers, while others ran deep into the forest, even though no bombs were actually dropped directly on Tuol Kruos village. My parents took all of us children away from the house into hiding in the forest, where they built a small hut roofed with Samlanh leaves along a stream for us to stay temporarily. After staying in the forest for about two weeks, my parents brought us back to live in the village.

In 1974, the Khmer Rouge troops took complete control of Tuol Kruos village. They began organizing all the indigenous Pear people to exchange labor for rice farming, but they did not force the people to do heavy labor yet. They simply told everyone to work hard on the rice fields to get a good harvest so they could share the rice to eat, allowing people to stay and eat at their respective homes.

On April 17, 1975, the Khmer Rouge army captured Phnom Penh and achieved victory over Marshal Lon Nol’s soldiers. Not long after liberating Phnom Penh, the Khmer Rouge began establishing a collective cooperative called the “Sre Taing Yor Cooperative.” They walked around collecting plates, pots, gold, silver, cows, buffaloes, pigs, chickens, ducks, and other properties belonging to the Pear people to put into the collective cooperative so that people would eat, work, and live together.

Afterward, the Khmer Rouge divided the people to work in different places, organizing them into the children’s unit, youth unit, female youth unit, and elders’ unit. My younger siblings and I were selected by the Khmer Rouge to join the children’s unit, which was managed by Ta Yean Doeun (a Pear indigenous man) and consisted of about 50 children. Ta Yean Doeun then divided us into small groups of about 15 to 20 children. Initially, the Khmer Rouge ordered my siblings and me to clear wild sunflowers and collect animal manure to chop up and make fertilizer for the rice fields in Tuol Kruos village. Ta Yean Doeun was kind-hearted and never mistreated the children. Meanwhile, my parents were assigned to the elders’ unit to farm at the Sre Taing Yor Cooperative in Tuol Kruos village. As for food, I received enough rice mixed with soup.

In 1976, I was transferred to do much heavier labor. My daily tasks included pulling rice seedlings, transplanting rice, carrying bundles of harvested rice, threshing rice, digging soil, building paddy dikes, digging canals through the fields in Tuol Kruos village, and building the O’Thom dam (currently located in Tuol Kruos village). The Khmer Rouge mandated that each group of about 15 children must build a section of the dam measuring 1 meter wide and 10 meters long every morning. If the children could not complete the assigned dam section within the morning, they had to stay and finish it before they were allowed to rest and eat.

After working the rice fields and digging canals, my group and I were forced by the Khmer Rouge to dig earth to raise the field dikes. I worked without any time to rest and was extremely exhausted. Food became much scarcer than before; the Khmer Rouge distributed rice mixed with red corn and cassava, and the soup had no nutritional value. This left me and several other children undernourished, causing us to become thin, frail, and incredibly weak. When eating at the worksite dining hall, we had to sit exactly in our designated spots; if anyone sat in the wrong place, the Khmer Rouge cut off their food rations. The dining hall featured long structures with long tables where people sat facing each other. Each person got a small bowl of rice, and four children shared one bowl of soup. Meanwhile, my parents were reassigned by the Khmer Rouge to work in the mobile unit.

In 1977, the Khmer Rouge evacuated me and 5 other indigenous Pear young women by truck from Tuol Kruos village to Phnom Kravanh district without giving any reason. When we arrived at Prek village (now Prek 3 village, Samraong commune, Phnom Kravanh district, Pursat province), the Khmer Rouge sent me by boat across the river from Prek village to Leach village (the current location of Phnom Kravanh Market) to work as a garment seamstress. There were about 100 female workers at the sewing site. My daily task was cutting and sewing clothes; the Khmer Rouge let us work normally without strict quotas.

Later, the Khmer Rouge sent two more indigenous Pear individuals from Tuol Kruos village—a female named Thai Nen and another person whose name I forget—to work as seamstresses at the site with me. I learned from Thai Nen that my parents and siblings had also been evacuated to Phnom Kravanh district, but I never got to meet them. The clothes I sewed were sent by the Khmer Rouge to be distributed across villages, communes, districts, and to the military.

I worked 8 hours a day: from 7:00 AM until 11:00 AM, followed by a break to eat rice or porridge, and then from 1:00 PM until 5:00 PM, after which we rested to eat rice or porridge again. After dinner, I had to plant vegetables such as mustard greens, water spinach, cucumbers, pumpkins, winter melons, and many other vegetables to supply the worksite kitchen. The food for the seamstresses and me was sufficient and not very lacking because the head of the sewing workshop, Ta Thas, was gentle and kind-hearted. Aside from sewing clothes, the Khmer Rouge sent our group to help local people farm in the mobile bases within Leach commune. During the day, I pulled, transplanted, and harvested rice. At night, I had to chop fertilizer to put into the fields or thresh rice until 9:00 PM or 10:00 PM before being allowed to rest.

In 1979, Vietnamese troops advanced into Phnom Kravanh district. At that time, I did not flee Phnom Kravanh district because I had a bone-related illness that prevented me from traveling long distances. The Vietnamese soldiers did not harm me or the other citizens. Later, my mother found out that I was living in Phnom Kravanh district, so she came to take me to live in Prek village (now Prek 1 village, Samraong commune, Phnom Kravanh district, Pursat province). My mother told me: “Your father and younger brother died of starvation while fleeing up the mountain.” After reuniting with my siblings and mother, my family and I farmed to make a living in Prek village. In the year 2000, my family and I returned to our hometown in Tuol Kruos village, where we cleared land to farm rice and crops up to the present day. I always remember the painful and miserable stories of my childhood during the period when the Khmer Rouge controlled my village and commune.

Post-Reading Student Discussions and Impressions
Student Reflections on the Survivor’s Story:
First Student: I never knew that children were forced to do such heavy labor because I only used to hear my grandmother say that the elderly were given a lot of work by the Khmer Rouge. After reading Grandma Chheng’s story, I think she worked incredibly hard even though she was still very young, just because she didn’t want the Khmer Rouge to cut off her food rations. I feel sorry for Grandma Chheng because she was separated from her parents and siblings, not seeing them for nearly 3 years, and later she even lost her father and younger brother.

Second Student: I understand that Grandma Chheng went through many stories and hardships during her childhood. I noticed that before the Khmer Rouge entered Tuol Kruos village, the indigenous Pear people had many traditions and customs, and Grandma Chheng and all the village children lived very happily. But later, Grandma Chheng and all the children were forced to work day and night without time to rest, and they didn’t even have enough food to eat.

Final Impressions:
Hay Sokna (Male/Female, Grade 8A, Hun Sen Pramoy High School):

“After I studied the history of ‘Democratic Kampuchea 1975–1979’ and read the story of the Khmer Rouge survivor named Chhit Chheng, who is an indigenous Pear, I feel deeply sympathetic toward her. During her childhood, she could not attend school because her family was poor. Then, during the Khmer Rouge regime, she was forced by the Khmer Rouge to overwork and lacked enough food to eat.”

Yim Sophanna (Male/Female, Grade 8A, Hun Sen Pramoy High School):

“After reading the history book ‘Democratic Kampuchea 1975–1979,’ I learned many stories related to the Khmer Rouge regime. Then I read the story of Khmer Rouge survivor Chhit Chheng, who belongs to the indigenous Pear minority. After finishing her story, I understand much better about her struggle and how she endured starvation just to stay alive.”

Oun Vanna (Male/Female, Grade 8A, Hun Sen Pramoy High School):

“After reading the story of Aunt Chhit Chheng, I really pity her because she was given quotas by the Khmer Rouge to perform heavy tasks like building dams, raising field dikes, and digging canals. Meanwhile, her father and younger brother died during the Khmer Rouge regime because they were sick with no medicine to treat them and starved.”

Sinen Sothearith (Male/Female, Grade 8A, Hun Sen Pramoy High School):

“After reading the story of Aunt Chhit Chheng, I feel very sorry for her because she encountered numerous hardships through forced overwork and being starved when the work was not completed according to the Khmer Rouge guidelines.”
