“As Khmer Rouge survivors grow older, their memories begin to fade”
By Sreng Lyda and Seang Chenda
At a time when memories of experiences under the Khmer Rouge regime are gradually fading, collecting, documenting, and sharing the stories of survivors is more important than ever. These efforts play a vital role in preserving and passing on the historical memory of the Khmer Rouge period to future generations.
Pok Phuong, approximately 110 years old, as confirmed by her daughter and grandson, lives in Veun Sien Village, O’Svay Commune, Borei O’Svay Sen Chey District, Stung Treng Province, Cambodia., lives in Veun Sien Village, O’Svay Commune, Borei O’Svay Sen Chey District, Stung Treng Province. She was born in O’Ta Las Village, Preah Romkel Commune, Thala Barivat District (but now Borei O’Svay Sen Chey District), Stung Treng Province. Her father was named Pok and her mother Khiev. She was the youngest of three daughters. Phuong has eight children and descendants spanning five generations—children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and great-great-great-grandchildren.
Throughout her long life, Phuong has lived through many important periods in Cambodia’s history, from the French colonial era and the Sangkum Reastr Niyum period to the Lon Nol era, the Khmer Rouge regime, the State of Cambodia period, and the present day, when Cambodia enjoys peace and continues to rebuild and develop.
Although Phuong’s memory has begun to fade with old age, with the support of her eldest daughter, who lives with her, she is still able to recall several important events that remain deeply rooted in her memory. Among these memories are going to welcome His Majesty King Norodom Sihanouk, the late King Father, when he visited O’Svay in 1968 to inaugurate various royal achievements; living through the years of war; experiencing food shortages and hardship under the Khmer Rouge regime; rebuilding her life after the fall of the Khmer Rouge; and traveling to the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh during the 1990s to receive royal gifts personally granted by His Majesty King Norodom Sihanouk, the late King Father, and Her Majesty Queen Norodom Monineath Sihanouk.
The Experiences and Memories of Pok Phuong
Listening to and documenting the memories that remain with Phuong is immensely valuable for understanding Cambodia’s history and the everyday lives of its people during those periods. Her memories are not merely personal stories; they are part of a history lived and experienced by an entire generation. Time continues to move forward, and as Khmer Rouge survivors pass away, we risk losing stories and experiences that have not yet been documented and preserved. Therefore, it is our responsibility to listen, document, preserve, and continue sharing the experiences of Khmer Rouge survivors, ensuring that their valuable stories and memories are not lost to time and can be passed on to future generations.
Veun Sien village: A Remote Mekong Island Community in Borei O’Svay Sen Chey District
Veun Sien village is located in O’Svay Commune, Borei O’Svay–Sen Chey District, Stung Treng Province, on a remote area approximately 14 kilometers from the district. The village has a total population of 404 people living in 88 households, including 208 women. Surrounded by the Mekong River, most residents depend on boats for transportation. Villagers primarily work as farmers and fishers, relying heavily on the natural resources of the Mekong River to support their daily livelihoods. Although the Mekong River and waterways are essential sources of livelihood, the village’s remote geographical location also creates difficulties in accessing public services, particularly for elderly and disabled Khmer Rouge survivors. Traveling from the island to the mainland can require considerable time and financial resources, and the journey becomes even more difficult during unfavorable weather conditions. For elderly survivors who are unable to walk, traveling to a health center to receive medical examinations and healthcare can become a significant challenge.
From the Challenge of Mobility to a New Smile
Recognizing the difficulties Phuong faced when traveling to the “Preah Norodom Sihanouk Raja and Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk” Health Center in O’Svay, the team from the Queen Mother Library organized an initiative to provide her with a wheelchair to support her mobility and make daily travel easier, particularly when seeking medical examinations and healthcare services at the health center. The difficulties Phuong had previously faced in moving around were replaced by a smile and a sense of joy when she sat in her new wheelchair. This humanitarian support is not merely a mobility aid for Phuong. It also represents a new source of hope, helping to improve her comfort, safety, and independence when traveling to receive medical care and when participating in activities within her community.
Caring for Elderly Khmer Rouge Survivors and Supporting Their Well-Being
Continuing to care for and support Khmer Rouge survivors is a task that is increasingly racing against time, because time cannot be stopped. Aging and declining health can cause survivors’ memories to become increasingly blurred or disappear altogether. The story of Pok Phuong reminds us that Khmer Rouge survivors need not only attention to their well-being and livelihoods, but also efforts to document and preserve their memories and experiences. As the memories of survivors gradually fade with age, listening to, documenting, and preserving their stories is work that cannot wait.
