Koul Nol: Food Transportation for the Khmer Rouge Military
My name is Kul Nol. I am a 68-year-old man, born in Trapeang Reang village, Memot commune, Memot district, Kampong Cham province (now part of Tboung Khmum province, where I currently live). My father, Kul Nom, passed away in 1985 from an illness, and my mother, Krouch Chhoch, also died of illness. I have seven siblings (four sisters), and I am the sixth child. I married my wife, Phy, and together we have five children (three daughters).
When I was young, my parents sent me to live at Memot Pagoda in Memot district so that I could receive an education, as there were no schools or teachers in our village at the time. I studied up to the old Grade 9. My teachers were monks residing at Memot Pagoda named Venerable Ngin Ngaong and Venerable Huor.
In 1970, Lon Nol staged a coup d’état that ousted Prince Norodom Sihanouk, sparking demonstrations across local communities nationwide. The people of Memot district were deeply dissatisfied with the coup and began mobilizing mass protests to demand the restoration of Prince Norodom Sihanouk to power. I joined the demonstrations alongside other villagers. We gathered in Memot district and marched toward Snuol district in Kratie province. Tensions between the crowds and Lon Nol’s soldiers escalated into violence, resulting in deaths and injuries in Snuol district during the protests. After the demonstrations subsided, I was ordained as a monk at Memot Pagoda, with my family joining to celebrate.
In 1974, upper echelons organized administrative sub-districts (Sangkat) in preparation for establishing cooperatives. During the Khmer Rouge era, Memot district was split into two separate districts: Memot district, led by Kong Chhum, and Tramung district, led by Oeun. In 1975, the Khmer Rouge forced me to leave the monkhood. I disrobed, left Memot Pagoda, and returned to Trapeang Reang village, where the Khmer Rouge assigned me to the village mobile labor unit. I built rice paddy dikes and reservoirs across various villages designated by the Khmer Rouge. I worked until evening before returning home, and on some nights, I slept at different village cooperatives. At that time, food shortages were not yet severe; I still had enough to eat and could sleep comfortably, although I had to perform heavy manual labor every day.
In 1976, the Khmer Rouge assigned me to logistics to supply their military units. They tasked me with gathering food supplies to provide to Khmer Rouge soldiers preparing for combat along the Cambodia–Vietnam border. Together with Maong Andet (also known as Sok), I went around collecting unmilled rice, milled rice, and meat from various cooperatives and handed them over to the higher authorities to distribute.
In 1977, Southwest Zone/Central troops (Kâng Toap Machhima) arrived to purge former Lon Nol soldiers, village and commune officials, village guerrillas, and leaders of mobile labor units. My family was accused of treason against Angkar because one of my older brothers had served as a Lon Nol soldier. The leaders of the mobile labor unit in Trapeang Reang village, named Brother Hoeb and Leap, were arrested by the Khmer Rouge, executed, and their bodies dumped into a well located in Salang Ti Pir village, Dar commune, Memot district, Kampong Cham province (now Tboung Khmum province). Meanwhile, the Khmer Rouge continued deceptive propaganda campaigns claiming they were looking for educated intellectuals to offer salaries and rank. I was close friends with a man named Sorn, who served on the Memot district operational committee. Aware that the Khmer Rouge intended to kill him, Sorn fled to take shelter at my home in Trapeang Reang village, keeping numerous documents hidden upstairs in my house. One night, the Khmer Rouge raided my home to arrest him, but Sorn managed to escape on foot toward Chheu Khloeum village in Romchek commune shortly before they arrived.
About a week later, Sorn asked me to drive an oxcart to transport his belongings and documents from Trapeang Reang village to Chheu Khloeum village. While driving the oxcart along the road, I was intercepted by about three Central cadre soldiers who stopped me for questioning. One of them asked, “Where are you taking this oxcart, comrade? What do you have inside?” Terrified, I worried they would discover a concealed CKC carbine rifle rolled up inside a sleeping mat, along with Sorn’s documents. I calmly replied that the cart contained only a small amount of food supplies being delivered to the cooperative in Romchek commune. Fortunately, the soldiers did not search the oxcart. I continued driving until I safely reached Chheu Khloeum village in Romchek commune and handed everything over to Sorn.
In early 1978, Sorn and his entire family were executed by the Khmer Rouge; only one son, In, survived (though In passed away after the Khmer Rouge regime). As for myself, I joined a mobile unit in Lo village, Kampoan commune, Memot district. Many core youth recruits (Kâmlang Snuol) were drafted into the military; none of us wanted to enlist, but no one dared refuse.
Later, the Khmer Rouge evacuated me to Dambae district. I stayed near Dambae Pagoda in Chey Sambath village, Dambae commune, Dambae district, Kampong Cham province (now Tboung Khmum province). I remained there until the collapse of the Khmer Rouge regime, after which I returned to my native village.
