On the morning of August 17, 2026, the Koh Thma Documentation Center team organized a classroom forum on the history of Democratic Kampuchea (1975-1979) for 18 students (8 female) from Bun Rany Hun Sen Koh Thma Primary School.

As a start, Mr. Chhum Ra, a staff member of the Koh Thma Documentation Center, led the students to visit the photo exhibition at the Koh Thma Documentation Center, left from the 1960s to the 1990s. Mr. Chhum Ra showed the students the photo exhibition and paintings on the history of Democratic Kampuchea (1975-1979), the journey towards the overthrow of the genocidal regime on June 20, 1977.

Mr. Chhum Ra continued that in 1975, the people living in the Koh Thma area were assigned by the Khmer Rouge to work in rice fields and fields in groups of hand laborers, helping each other to work. When the rice fields or fields were finished in one place, they continued to work in another place until all the rice fields and fields were finished before they stopped. Then the Khmer Rouge established low-level cooperatives and evacuated people from Phnom Penh to live in the countryside and worked on rice field. People evacuated from Phnom Penh settled in Beng Kaeng village, Kdol Leu village, Koh Thma village, Ton Loung commune, Rom Chek commune and Choam, Choam Ta Mao commune, Memot district, Kampong Cham province (now Tbong Khmum province).

In 1976, the Khmer Rouge established high-level cooperatives to work together, eat together, and sleep together in the Koh Thma area. Even cows, buffaloes, property, gold, silver, dishes, and pots, the Khmer Rouge collected from the people and put them all into the cooperatives. In 1976, the Khmer Rouge recruited young men and women to be mobile troops, soldiers, and medical staffs in villages, communes, and districts. After the Khmer Rouge recruited workers by unit for a year, the Communist Party of Cambodia accused the people in the eastern Zone of joining hands with the Vietnamese, Vietnamese-born Khmer people who betrayed the revolution and the organization.

In 1978, the Khmer Rouge Southwestern Zone’s soldiers came to arrest former leaders of small groups, leaders of large groups, former Lon Nol soldiers, teachers, and medical staffs in villages and communes in the eastern Zone and took them to rebuild or kill them. The people living in the Koh Thma area of the Khmer Rouge evacuated from their villages to work on rice fields in villages, communes, districts of Kratie, Kampong Cham; and Kampong Thom Provinces. Some people fled to Vietnam. The people living in the Koh Thma area were considered new or prepared people. Many people died in Svay Chrehcommune, Khsoem commune, Snuol District, Kratie Province due to overwork, illness, lack of medical treatment, lack of enough food, and were killed by the Khmer Rouge.

In 1979, the Pol Pot genocidal regime collapsed, and people returned to their respective villages and districts. Some people had to travel on foot, and some arrived home first, with Vietnamese army trucks transporting them to their villages and districts. When people returned to their villages and districts, they were short of rice and food. Some of the villagers exchanged gold, silver, or valuables for rice in Vietnam. Some people found rice in Snuol District, Kratie Province, which was left after the fire. The rice was burned and turned into a pile of rice to be used for daily food.

Next, Mr. Chhum Ra told the students the story of a survivor who survived the Khmer Rouge regime:

My name is Kung Chhorn, a 76-year-old male, born in Lval village, Tonloung commune, Memot district, Kampong Cham province. I currently live in Lvea Leu village, Tonloung commune, Memot district, Tbong Khmum province. My father is Kung and my mother is Nheung. I have 4 siblings (2 girls) and I am the third child. My parents died during the Pol Pot era due to food shortages. My wife is Nheuk Saborn, 67 years old. They have 10 children, 4 of whom died, and 6 are still alive (3 girls). Some of the children have families, some do not have families.

When I was a child, I studied at Wat Kantuot, Choam Ta Mao commune, Memot district. I walked from home through the forest to Wat Kantuot for a whole day. There were many children who went to be his students. The monk was the teacher of calligraphy in the temple. There were no female students. I don’t know why in the past, there were no female students like the male students? He had many students in Kantuot village, Tamao village, and Lvea Leu village. He studied twice a day, in the morning after the monks had finished their prayers and at night. He taught Khmer letters and dharma. When I was young, my parents gave me a monk’s robe because in those days, if you were a monk and learned, you were called a scholar. Wherever you went, people loved you. But I studied for 3 months and returned home because I didn’t want to stay at the temple without any character.

In early 1975, some villages and communes began to organize a guard group to prevent the enemies enter the village. Suon was the organizer and recruiter of the guard group. In 1975, no Phnom Penh residents came to live there. Most of the Khmer Rouge took Phnom Penh residents to Choam Tamao commune. At first, they worked as surveyors, doing farming, and planting rice. In 1976, the Khmer Rouge evacuated the Phnom Peng residents to Pong Teuk village, Tonloung commune, Memot district. They didn’t stay there for 3 months. The Khmer Rouge told everyone to leave the village immediately. The Khmer Rouge small and big cells leaders said that there would be enough food to eat in the future. When all of you arrived, there were people waiting to prepare food, but in reality, there was no food to eat. My wife and I were evacuated by the Khmer Rouge to Svay Chreh commune, Snuol district, Kratie province. The head of Svay Chreh commune assigned me to build a dam and make a canal to store water for rice fields. My wife had to go to harvest rice in different groups, while my father and mother were placed in Mlech (Mlech is located in Svay Chreh commune, Snuol district, Kratie province, an uninhabited area. The Khmer Rouge evacuated people from other places to work in rice fields, cutting wood to use as land for rice fields).

My child, who was about 2 years old, was placed with 2-3 elders to take care of the child while the parents went to work far from the village. When I went to the dam and returned, I saw my child lying dead in a small hut in the middle of the rice fields. When I saw my child dead, I didn’t feel like working, I didn’t even want to eat. I carried my child’s body to bury it in the forest at the head of the rice fields, Svay Chreh commune, Snuol district, Kratie province. When my wife came back from harvesting rice, she asked me, “Where is our child?” I was so speechless that I couldn’t speak. I told my wife that our child was dead, even though I hadn’t even arrived yet. Besides my child, my brother was a Khmer Rouge soldier who died in Prek Ter, Boslao commune, Chet Borei district, Kratie province, during the fighting. As for my father, he died in Mlech because he didn’t have enough food. My father looked thin, his wrists were only a few inches long, and his eyes were sunken. My family was evacuated by the Khmer Rouge from Svay Chreh commune to sleep in Thma Kre commune, Kratie province, overnight while waiting for a ferry to cross to Stung Trang district, Kampong Cham province. My family and other people were transpoted to Chamkar Leu district, Kampong Cham province by truck, where the rice harvest was a month period. I had enough food in Chamkar Leu, no shortages, and ate rice from the cooperative. I stayed in Chamkar Leu for two months, the rice harvest was not ready, the Vietnamese soldiers arrived and the 09 soldiers told the people to go back to their respective villages. We took a truck from Kampong Cham to Ponhea Krek, took a two-night break, and then set off on a journey to sleep on the road all the way home.

Finally, the staff of the Koh Thma Documentation Center distributed Searching for the Truth Magazine to the students, allowing them to study, research, and take photos as souvenirs.

Student Interest:
1) Name: Ny Sreylap, female, student of Bun Rany Hun Sen Koh Thma Primary School, I felt very happy when I joined the exhibition at the Koh Thma Documentation Center. Then, the team members made a presentation about the posters and talked about the evacuation of people from their hometowns to live in their own villages and making people work without breaks. I really feel pain and pity for the grandparents who have experienced this cruel regime.

2) Name: Phearunan Pheakun, male, student of Bun Rany Hun Sen Koh Thma Primary School. This morning, I went to see the exhibition at the museum at Koh Thma Documentation Center. I saw and learned about the pictures in the Museum and felt very sorry. Those pictures show the younger generation like me a lot. Especially during the Khmer Rouge regime, my grandparents faced great hardships. Especially during the Khmer Rouge regime, my grandparents were forced to work without breaks, running out of food. Whereas, none of the children in that era had studied as deeply as we do today. So, as a child of the next generation, I strive to study well and be a good child for the national society.

3) Ratana Chanika, female, a student of Bun Rany Hun Sen Koh Thma Primary School. I felt very happy to come and see the posters showing the activities of the working people during the Khmer Rouge era. In particular, I gained new knowledge about the Koh Thma area, which was the starting point of the liberation of the country from the genocidal regime of Pol Pot.

4) Chea David, male, a student of Bun Rany Hun Sen Koh Thma Primary School. I felt very happy to have the opportunity to visit the exhibition in the Koh Thma Documentation Center, which shows the activities of the working people and the map of the mass graves where the Khmer Rouge killed people.

Observations:
• The students are well-behaved
• The students are brave and know how to ask questions
• The students are interested in the exhibition

Challenges:
• The students do not have notebooks
