Students Enjoy Countryside Activities, Reading, and Dhamma Lessons at The Koh Thma Documentation Center & Praying House of The S’tieng Ethnic Village During the Long School Vacation

The two-month long vacation runs from September 1 to October 31, 2026. For city students, vacation often means leisure travel, supplementary tutoring courses, or sitting in air-conditioned rooms playing on their phones. However, rural students—especially in Kdol Leu Village, Tonloung Commune, Memot District, Tboung Khmum Province—spend their time enjoying various activities across rice paddies, setting aside time to read books and study Dhamma at the The Koh Thma Documentation Center & Praying House of The S’tieng Ethnic Village.

Children Catching Fish in Streams and Rice Fields
As crowing roosters awaken the children at sunrise, some accompany their parents to the fields, while others run and play in the village or open spaces, creating the joyful atmosphere typical of childhood. During the cool afternoon, a group of boys head across the paddies and along the streams carrying scoops, woven baskets, and water bottles, searching among the grass clumps for betta fish (fighting fish) bubble nests. Sneaking forward, each child carefully scoops the fish up. The Siamese fighting fish, with bodies and fins shimmering in vibrant reds, iridescent blues, or gleaming gold in the sunlight, display a stunning golden sheen; when agitated or flaring at one another, their expanded fins and tails resemble ripples of bright red and blue silk. Meanwhile, the striped, sparkling wild bettas are collected into separate bottles.

Another group of children heads toward the paddy fields carrying bamboo fishing poles, set lines, and perforated tin cans packed with live earthworms and tiny frogs for bait. They identify spots between rice clumps and along dykes with optimal water depth to plant their set lines. Rigging the worms and small frogs onto hooks, they gently lower them into the water, waiting for snakehead, catfish, and other species to strike. Broad smiles appear whenever a pole twitches and bends, signaling a catch. As the sun sets, the children gather their fishing gear and carry their haul home—feet coated in paddy mud and lightly soaked in sweat, but faces beaming with joy.

Playing Sports in the Rural Fields
In the cool late afternoon, village children gather on high ground amidst the fields, setting up a rustic volleyball court—no shoes, no fancy uniforms. They play with pure enthusiasm; ringing cheers and lively laughter fill the air against the backdrop of lush green fields. Such unvarnished fun makes for an unforgettable childhood memory. As dusk falls, they wrap up their games and walk home refreshed.

Nighttime Dhamma, Literacy, and Arithmetic Lessons by Monks
Under the quiet night, with cool breezes blowing across the village fields, a gentle light glows from the The Koh Thma Documentation Center & Praying House of The S’tieng Ethnic Village. Venerable Yuos Phary, the abbot of Hatthivannaram Pagoda (locally known as Kdol Pagoda), presides over classes to share knowledge with the villagers of Kdol Leu. Grandparents, aunts, uncles, and young children gather with cheerful expressions, eager to learn. On a simple chalkboard, the monk meticulously writes letters and arithmetic tables. The young children listen attentively and read aloud in lively unison, while the elderly diligently memorize chants with warm smiles—as if fulfilling a lifelong desire for literacy missed during their youth, particularly during the Khmer Rouge era when schooling was denied to them. Following the Dhamma and literacy lessons, the monk explains Buddhist moral precepts, ethics, and virtuous living. The unison of chanting and reflective conversation fosters a peaceful and serene environment.

Reading Books During Free Time at Koh Thma Documentation Center & Praying House of The S’tieng Ethnic Village
Staff from the Koh Thma Documentation Center welcome visitors seeking to study the history of Democratic Kampuchea (1975–1979). In their spare time, local children frequently drop in to read, with staff on hand to guide them through texts and archival photographs documenting the dark regime. The Koh Thma Documentation Center & Praying House of The S’tieng Ethnic Village serves not just as a leisure space, but as a bridge between past and present. By reading history books, the children absorb vital lessons that nurture fresh perspectives and awaken an appreciation for justice, reconciliation, and peacebuilding—ensuring such bitter history is never repeated.

What captures the children’s attention most are the real survival stories from the Khmer Rouge regime. Reading about the suffering, separation, and resilient spirit of their ancestors and elders deepens their understanding of the immense sacrifices made and the priceless value of today’s freedom. Reflective expressions mingled with profound respect reveal their deep gratitude toward the older generation who endured and survived the genocide.
