While many of us are living in safer environments and celebrating the 115th Anniversary of International Women’s Day in 2026, highlighting accountability, access to justice, and security for women and girls, many other women and children are still living in conflict zones or border camps with limited access to food, safety, healthcare, education, and justice.
The border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand has not only resulted in casualties but has also caused territorial losses and the displacement of thousands of people. Despite a ceasefire in December 2025, at least 50,000 Cambodian citizens, most of them women and children, remain in makeshift camps, after their land, homes, and properties were taken during the conflict.
Lasting peace continues to face challenges. While Thailand often presents itself on the international stage as a country committed to international law and peace, concerns remain over continued military activities along the border. Reports indicate that military trenches and roads are being constructed in contested areas, and that Cambodian villages in those territories are being transformed into Thai-administered settlements, while local Cambodian villagers continue to face renewed threats.
At present, there is still no clear timeline for justice or a durable resolution. Progress toward long-term peace has been slowed as the proposal from Cambodia’s State Secretariat of Border Affairs to resume joint surveys and border demarcation, an important step toward peaceful settlement, has yet to move forward. At the same time, global attention has shifted toward other international crises, including the US–Israel conflict with Iran in the Middle East, leaving the situation along the Cambodia–Thailand border largely overlooked.
Despite these challenges, the affected communities continue to share their stories and call for justice for what has been lost and damaged during the border conflict. They remain hopeful that one day they will be able to return to their hometowns.
Their endurance, advocacy for justice and peace, and resilience have become the most powerful tools of the victims themselves. In the spirit of this year’s International Women’s Day theme, #BalanceTheScales, strengthening systems, improving accountability, and ensuring access to justice for women and girls should inspire collective global action. Such efforts can help ensure that women and children everywhere, especially those affected by conflict, can reunite with their families, receive justice, and live in lasting peace.
