Family Reunion during the Pchum Ben Festival
Currently 75 years old, Grandma Nhien Khammany is the eldest child in a family whose father was named Thin Nhien and mother was named Prah Dam (both parents have already passed away). Grandma has three siblings in total, including herself, Nhien Khammany, the second younger brother named Nhien Chiem, and the third younger brother named Nhien Mao. Grandma’s original birthplace is in Kralapeas Village, Preah Romkel Commune, Thala Barivat District (currently located in Borei O’Svay Sen Chey District, Stung Treng Province). Grandma was married to her husband named Nai Sreng before the Khmer Rouge regime took power, with a traditional blessing ceremony and receiving a proper traditional dowry of 1,500 Riels (at that time, one chi of gold was worth 300 Riels), which was different from the Democratic Kampuchea era when the Angkar arranged collective marriages of 10 to 20 couples at a time and required them to make revolutionary commitments. Up to the present, Grandma and her husband have 5 biological children, including: the 1st son named Sreng Tyt, the 2nd son named Sreng Sao, the 3rd son named Sreng Heng, the 4th son named Sreng Hieng, and the 5th daughter named Sreng Chanleang, along with 15 grandchildren (7 granddaughters) and 3 great-grandchildren (2 great-granddaughters).
During the Khmer Rouge regime, the Angkar forced people to perform hard labor such as building dams, digging canals, transplanting rice seedlings dipped in human feces, and eating a ladle of porridge or wild yam (k’doch) to fill their stomachs. For Grandma herself, she did not go down to farm the rice fields directly, but was assigned to be a cook for the cooperative, serving approximately 15 families per unit. Every day, Grandma had to cook two large pans of food—one pan in the morning and one pan in the evening—having to weigh the vegetables, fish, and prahok (fermented fish paste) strictly according to the limits set by the Angkar. The dish cooked every day consisted only of water spinach, cassava leaves, and tomatoes boiled in plain water, without any salt, sugar, or MSG, and that taste has caused Grandma to feel repulsed by and despise water spinach to this day. Rice was mostly mixed with wild yam (k’doch) and banana root stems; whenever they were fortunate enough to get a barking deer (sambar) or a pangasius fish, it was minced and boiled with a little bit of rice to make porridge, shared so that each person received only a small bowl. Beyond the cooking hours, Grandma was forced by the Angkar to scoop human excrement from the unit latrines and dig termite mounds to produce fertilizer. The family had to live separated from one another, as her husband had to go away to work far afield, only being able to return every two to three days to bring along some wild sweet potato (sia) and wild yam (k’doch) as food gifts for the family. During that time, the eldest son, Sreng Tyt, developed a severe abscess on his leg, but due to the lack of proper medicine, the wound became infected, leaving a deep furrow scar on his leg to this very day. Later on, the residents of Kralapeas Village were evacuated to live scattered apart—some to Ou Rey Village, some to Morng Village, Sre Ruessei, Romdeng, and Chamkar Leu. There, Grandma still continued to work as a cook, but had slightly better rice to eat. Taking advantage during those difficult times, Grandma used to secretly take leftover crust rice to dry and hide in the forest, and together with her husband, secretly dug sweet potatoes grown around the hut to boil in a copper pot mixed with a can of rice to share among the family to eat, risking their lives if the Angkar had found out. Although during that regime Grandma never personally witnessed anyone being taken to be killed with her own eyes, fear was always present, especially whenever they saw a man named Ta Leng, who had killed many people, walking past; the villagers would always pull up fence posts to hold and sit casually, preparing to strike back in self-defense if an ill event occurred. Furthermore, Grandma’s greatest emotional trauma was the loss of her second younger brother named Nhien Chiem, whom the Angkar conscripted into the “Sacrifice Children’s Unit,” and who was taken away forever by the Angkar, with zero news up to the present, not knowing whether he is dead or alive. “If younger brother Chiem reads or hears this message, please return to visit your siblings; now our father and mother have both passed away, leaving only me and our youngest brother…”
After the liberation day in 1979, Grandma was transported by the military by boat along the Mekong River from Ou Trael back to Kralapeas Village, while Grandma’s husband rowed a large boat by his own hands all the way from Thala Barivat District to reunite with each other. When first returning to the village, everything was completely destroyed and ruined; even when going down to bathe at the riverbank port, human skulls were still found in the water. Grandma’s family had no shelter, only having built a small hut to live in temporarily. Back then, Grandpa Sreng was a robust man with great strength and broad shoulders; he rode a bicycle, carried wooden house pillars, and felled timber to build a house, while also striving to cultivate rice fields and grow crops to raise the children until they were grown enough, before Grandpa Nai Sreng passed away in 1989.
Pchum Ben Season, Gratitude, and Peace of Mind
Currently, due to advancing age, Grandma Nhien Khammany suffers from multiple underlying illnesses, such as hypertension, heart failure, cardiomegaly (enlarged heart), and joint pain in her legs that prevents her from walking far. However, during this year’s Pchum Ben Festival, Grandma’s house has turned into a place filled with warmth and smiles. As previously recalled in the writing “My Family’s Pchum Ben” from last year, this year, the children, all 15 grandchildren (7 granddaughters), and 3 great-grandchildren (2 great-granddaughters) traveled across land and over the river to gather in great numbers. The descendants brought along multi-tier tiffin lunchboxes, fruits, traditional sticky rice cakes (Num Ansom), and prepared offerings trays with monetary contributions and pure drinking water to pay homage and ask for blessings from Grandma for peace and prosperity.
Lastly, Grandma expressed her deepest gratitude to the Documentation Center of Cambodia (DC-Cam) and the Queen Mother Library for their compassionate donation of a wheelchair to Grandma. This wheelchair not only facilitates Grandma’s mobility, but also serves as a tremendous source of encouragement and great smiles for Grandma in her old age. Grandma extends best wishes for good health, happiness, and success in all duties to the leadership and all staff members of the Documentation Center of Cambodia and the Queen Mother Library.
