Spirit of Youth Loving Their Hometown: Grade 10 Students of Borei O’Svay Sen Chey High School Enhance Community Beauty and Tourism Through Stone Bench Donation

Nurturing a love for one’s homeland and engaging in social activities serve as a vital foundation in shaping the next generation into strong pillars of the nation. Under the direct guidance and facilitation of Teacher Ron Lady, a team of five Grade 10 students from Borei O’Svay Sen Chey High School, representing the Volunteer For My Community (VMC) youth group, includes: 1. Student Aem Chanrithpol (Team Leader), 2. Student Kheng Narong (Member), 3. Student Ros Narien (Member), 4. Student Roth Sokuntheany (Member), and 5. Student Sotr Reksa (Member). Together, they collaborated on a project under the theme “The Beauty of Tourism in My Community,” running from May 20, 2026, to October 10, 2026. This initiative is part of the youth volunteer competition organized by the Stung Treng Provincial Department of Education, Youth and Sport, featuring 14 participating teams competing for first place at the provincial level to advance to the national competition in Phnom Penh.

Previously, the VMC youth members frequently visited the Sangkum Reastr Niyum King Father–Queen Mother Heritage Building (Borei O’Svay–Sen Chey) to study, research, and inquire about local history as well as community development initiatives. Regular presentations and knowledge sharing by Mr. Sreng Lyda served as an inspiring catalyst, motivating the students to translate their learning into tangible actions to help enhance the appeal of O’Svay commune. Through on-site data collection, the students observed that the Mekong riverfront boasts picturesque scenery and fresh air, making it an ideal gathering place for students to read and engage in self-study, as well as a welcoming relaxation area for local villagers and tourists. Recognizing the need for additional seating, the VMC team initiated the idea of arranging eight stone benches on the riverfront terrace of the Sangkum Reastr Niyum King Father–Queen Mother Heritage Building (Borei O’Svay–Sen Chey) to contribute to local community development.

To bring this donation to fruition, the Grade 10 youth demonstrated great maturity by structuring a comprehensive plan and clearly communicating the project’s purpose. Funding for the eight stone benches was raised through a collective effort uniting school peers, dedicated support from parents and guardians, and generous contributions from local community members. Beyond classroom theory, this direct hands-on experience instilled essential life skills, including teamwork, public communication, leadership, and the genuine value of solidarity. On September 28, 2026, all eight stone benches were delivered and arranged along the riverbank on the grounds of the Sangkum Reastr Niyum King Father–Queen Mother Heritage Building (Borei O’Svay–Sen Chey), creating an attractive and practical public space that meets real community needs.

A representative of the VMC team shared that community service and local development can always begin with small steps and available resources. The team hopes these stone benches will provide great comfort and convenience to villagers, young children, and visiting travelers, while also encouraging all visitors to care for public property and dispose of waste responsibly to preserve the long-term beauty of the riverfront.

On behalf of the staff at the Documentation Center of Cambodia, Stung Treng Branch, I, Sreng Lyda, would like to express my highest appreciation and deepest gratitude to: Teacher Ron Lady, for dedicating time, effort, and mentorship to guide and encourage the students toward achieving this meaningful outcome; the five VMC student members, for their steadfast spirit, love for their community, and dedication to transforming knowledge into tangible benefits for society; and the teachers, parents, guardians, and local community members, whose invaluable moral and financial support turned this youth-led initiative into a reality. We wish the VMC team great success in their upcoming provincial presentation and competition, with hopes of achieving excellent results to represent Stung Treng Province at the national level in Phnom Penh!
