Community Development Project: Dark Tourism Cycling Tour to Han Chey Community
Han Chey Community is located in Kampong Siem District, approximately 20 kilometers from Kampong Cham Provincial Town. The area features beautiful landscapes along the Mekong River, mountains, ancient temples, and Buddhist pagodas, making it a potential destination for developing Dark Tourism, with a focus on historical and educational experiences.

Dark Tourism Cycling Tour to Han Chey Community focuses on learning about the Khmer Rouge History through visits to historical sites, listening to the stories and experiences of Khmer Rouge survivors, and exploring the cultural and natural landscapes of the community.

The tour can be organized as a cycling tour, allowing students, researchers, and local and international visitors to travel between different sites and learn about the history and significance of each location.

1) Kampong Cham Documentation Center
The Kampong Cham Documentation Center is the fifth branch of the Documentation Center of Cambodia (DC-Cam), serving as the provincial research center for public, students and researchers, specifically those residing in Kampong Cham province. The center aims at providing access to a variety of resources, concerning the history of the Khmer Rouge to promote the awareness and understanding among the fellow citizens. The archives included but not limited to the Khmer Rouge documents, confessions, testimonies, films, and photographs. The center continues carrying the focal works of its parental institution, i.e. DC-Cam, in documenting, educating and disseminating documents on the Khmer Rouge history (or the history of Democratic Kampuchea), which governed Cambodia from 1975 to 1979. Since its inception on July 1, 2021, the center has opened to public and welcomed many delegates and visitors, including Khmer Rouge survivors, youths, teachers, and students to access its archives.

2) Moan Heur Pagoda – Killing Site During the Khmer Rouge Regime
Moan Heur Pagoda was a site where the Khmer Rouge brought and killed local people. According to the experience of Mr. Ngim Ngon, 73 years old, residents in this area were subjected to forced labor, severe food shortages, and killings under the Khmer Rouge regime.

3) Han Chey Mountain – Hiding Place for People Fleeing Khmer Rouge’s Killing
Han Chey Mountain is remembered in connection with stories of people fleeing and struggling to survive after enduring suffering and facing the threat of execution under the Khmer Rouge regime. From mid-1978 until the end of 1978, some people decided to flee into the forest on Han Chey Mountain to escape arrest and killing and to seek refuge and continue their lives.
According to the experience of Tong Sithat, a survivor of the Khmer Rouge regime, she recalled hearing about people whose relatives had been killed by Khmer Rouge cadres from the Southwestern Zone. Fearing that they would suffer the same fate, these people decided to flee into the forest on Han Chey Mountain in search of shelter and safety. To survive, they hid in the forest during the day and came out at night to search for food. Some reportedly stole food supplies or attacked Khmer Rouge militia units in order to obtain weapons and food. Later, those who had fled and resisted the control of Angkar were referred to by the Khmer Rouge as “Khmer White” (Khmer Sar) and were considered enemies opposing the Angkar.
The story of Han Chey Mountain reflects the difficult experiences of people during the Khmer Rouge regime, as well as their struggle for survival and their search for refuge in circumstances filled with fear.

4) Ke Prae Dam (Re-education Dam)
Ke Prae Dam (Re-education Dam) locates in L’peak village,Srak commune, Kampong Siem district, Kampong Cham province and its distance is about twenty kilometers from the provincial town. The dam is preserved and developed as a water storage reservoir for irrigating the rice fields of nearby communities. The dam was built by the forced labor of the Cambodian people to store water for rice fields and plantations during the Khmer Rouge regime (1975-1979). During the Khmer Rouge period, the Kae Prae dam was in Region 42 of the Central Zone (Old North Zone). The Central Zone was divided into three regions: Region 41; Region 42; and Region 43. As a result of forced labor, starvation, illness and execution, many people lost their life during constructing the dam.

5) The Chroy Chek Dam (Truoy Chek)
The Chroy Chek Dam (Truoy Chek) is located in Veal Kriel village, Trean commune, Kampong Siem district, and its another end is in Lepeak village, Srak commune, Kampong Siem district. Not only is the dam preserved and developed as a water storage reservoir for irrigating the rice fields of local communities but also it has become an attractive tourist destination for local tourists due to its beautiful landscape of the lush green rice field along with the large lake at the beginning of the rainy season. Reflecting back to the history, the dam was built by the forced labor of the Cambodian people to store water for rice fields and plantations during the Khmer Rouge regime between 1975 and 1978. During the Khmer Rouge period, the Chroy Chek Dam was located in Region 41 of the Central Zone (Old North Zone). The Central Zone was divided into three regions: Region 41; Region 42; and Region 43. Many people lost their life during the construction of the dam due to forced labor, starvation, and illness without a medical treatment.

6) Memorial keeping skulls and bones of the victims of the Khmer Rouge Regime at Phnom Pros–Phnom Srei
The Memorial keeping skulls and bones of the victims of the Khmer Rouge Regime at Phnom Pros–Phnom Srei is a memorial site dedicated to remembering those who lost their lives during the Khmer Rouge regime. Every year on May 20, Cambodia observes the National Day of Remembrance to honor and commemorate those who lost their lives during the Khmer Rouge regime.
